Three area residents are recovering after a devastating house fire in Egan that left one person seriously injured and claimed the life of a family dog.
According to Moody County Sheriff Troy Wellman, first responders were dispatched in the early morning hours of Monday, May 11, to a residential structure fire at 201 South Gilbert Street after a neighbor reported seeing flames coming from the side of a nearby garage.
By the time emergency crews arrived, the home and two vehicles parked in front of the residence were fully engulfed.
Three people were inside the home at the time of the fire. Two sustained minor injuries, while one was seriously hurt. No names have yet been publicly released.
Fire crews from Flandreau, Colman and Trent, along with Flandreau EMS, the Moody County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, remained on scene for roughly six and a half hours.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Wellman said early Monday that the State Fire Marshal’s office and the Division of Criminal Investigation were called in to assist in the investigation. At this point the investigation is ongoing. To our knowledge one is still in a burn unit in the Minneapolis area. We have no further information on her condition.
