Sunny sendoff for Flandreau’s Class of 2026

It was about as picture-perfect a graduation day as you could ask for Saturday in Flandreau.
With the sun shining overhead and the high school gym packed full of proud families, friends, teachers and community members, the Flandreau High School Class of 2026 officially crossed the stage and closed out their high school careers.
The afternoon was full of smiles along with a few emotional moments, and a lot of excitement about what comes next.
This year’s commencement speaker was Brian Relf, a familiar and well-loved face in the district. Relf, who spent years in the classroom before moving into his role as middle school principal, was met with applause and appreciation from both students and the crowd.

The sport, he told them, provided incredible metaphors for both school and life.
“If you know anything about dirt track racing, you know it’s not always pretty, it’s loud, it’s messy, it’s dusty, unpredictable and sometimes a little out of control, and that’s why it’s a perfect comparison for life,” he said.
“When drivers pull up to the starting line they do not know exactly what the track will look like at the end of the race. The conditions change, the turns get rougher, the dirt gets deeper, sometimes there are bumps you never expected. Life works the same way.”
His message to students was simple: mistakes will happen, challenges will come, but keep moving forward.
“Stay focused, stay in control, and don’t let the chaos around you throw you off the track.”
As they leave high school, he said, distractions will come, but character and direction matter.

“Hold the line, stay true to your values, stay true to the person you want to become, and do not let someone else’s race change your direction,” he said.
Students afterward reflected on just how meaningful their time in Flandreau had been — the friendships, the memories and the people who helped shape them — while also sharing excitement for the next chapter ahead.
