The Warehouse, a new indoor recreation facility, community weight room and fitness center in Flandreau, is preparing to open its doors to the public nearly a year after local fundraising efforts began to turn the idea into reality.
For many in the broader area, this is an exciting milestone.
For years, one of the most common things residents have said Flandreau needs is a gym or indoor recreation space. Since the closure of the former community gym operated by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, residents have often found themselves traveling elsewhere for workouts, strength training and year-round athletic and opportunities.
Created through the dedication of volunteers, donors and community supporters, The Warehouse is designed to provide a year-round space for recreation, fitness enthusiasts and community members of all ages to train, exercise and stay active. The facility will feature strength and conditioning equipment, training space for athletes, and opportunities for individual fitness, group workouts and community wellness programs.
Supporters say the project was born out of a desire to to help local youth develop their skills regardless of income, ability to participate on traveling teams, or weather conditions. Once underway, it also became about creating additional recreational and fitness opportunities for Flandreau and Moody County residents.
Organizers hope it becomes a community resource that encourages healthier lifestyles while providing another place for people to gather, connect and invest in themselves and their community.
An open house is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 400 South Center Street in Flandreau.

Organizers say the open house will give residents a chance to see firsthand how the facility has come together and learn more about membership opportunities, future programming and the long-term vision for the volunteer-driven project.
Organizers note the date remains subject to change depending on construction progress over the next two weeks, but after months of fundraising, planning and volunteer effort, the believe the finish line is finally in sight.
