Small towns have a way of doing patriotism well, but few communities embrace it quite like Egan.
Each year, residents gather for Flag Day to honor the nation’s history, veterans, and the values that continue to unite generations. This year, though, organizers are adding something extra special to the celebration.
As the country begins the countdown toward its 250th birthday, Egan will be among the first communities in the area to mark the milestone with a day full of patriotic activities, music, family fun, and community pride on Sunday, June 14.
The event is being organized by the City of Egan and the Egan American Legion Family and will feature everything from a community church service and patriotic parade to live entertainment, food vendors, children’s activities and a vehicle show.
“Our little city is doing what cities across America are doing this year — celebrating two and a half centuries of history, from the Declaration of Independence to present-day events. Egan has always been a patriotic city, with an emphasis on our veterans and Old Glory, symbols of unity, bravery and freedom. This day, and every day, my wish is to celebrate and live ‘one nation under God,’” said Bonnie Hemmer, one of the event organizers.
The celebration begins at 11 a.m. with a community worship service at Egan Church led by Pastor Alan Blankenfeld, along with special music from the Singing Legionnaires of Sioux Falls. Food vendors (11 am), family activities, a patriotic children’s parade, vendor fair, garage sale benefiting Egan’s Avenue of Flags (12 pm) and an afternoon of entertainment (1 pm) will follow throughout the day.
The event serves as both Egan’s annual Flag Day celebration and an early salute to America’s semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, which will be celebrated across the country this year.
