The Colman-Egan School Board has taken another formal step toward a proposed athletic complex on the eastern edge of town, approving a preliminary plan that would bring a dedicated football field and track facility to the growing district.
The action was necessary for the Colman City Council to consider an annexation request at its next meeting on June 2. That meeting will be held at Sunrise Ridge, as the city building is being used that day for the 2026 spring primary election.
Annexation would be required before additional planning and development can move forward.
The proposal has stirred up quite a bit of emotion across the community, particularly among homeowners whose properties sit between the existing school campus and the proposed site. Residents have raised concerns about increased traffic, pedestrian access through private property, noise, the site’s proximity to a slough and floodplain, and the overall impact a large athletic facility could have on their neighborhood.
District officials, however, believe the location, more than any other, offers the most practical path forward. It is closest to the school and would allow students to safely access practices and events without the transportation challenges that could come with any other potential location.
Supporters note that Colman-Egan remains one of the few area districts without a dedicated track facility. As enrollment and student participation continue to grow, district leaders say the complex would provide athletes with improved facilities for practice and competition while enhancing safety and accessibility.
The Moody County Enterprise will continue to follow the proposal as additional details become available.
