Suicide awareness walk Saturday in Flandreau

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and FSST Health Center are inviting the community to gather this Saturday, September 13th, for a suicide remembrance and awareness walk an event organizers say is both timely and deeply needed.

In recent years, the tribe and the wider community have experienced a number of heartbreaking losses due to suicide. Leaders say the walk is one important step in honoring those lost, reminding everyone of their worth and that there are people who care, and that resources are available to help them through whatever struggles they may be facing.

The event will begin with registration at 8 a.m. and the walk at 8:30 a.m. in Flandreau, with all community members encouraged to join. The start and finish will be at the Wicoicaga Otipi Community Center on Broad Avenue. Organizers hope the gathering not only raises awareness about depression and mental health challenges but also strengthens the message that no one has to face those challenges alone.

For anyone unable to attend, the message remains the same: help is here, and hope is within reach.
