In the event you weren’t able to be present at one of the milestone celebrations happening this past Friday, it was a day quietly capturing momentum building across the Flandreau community.
On one end of town, families, community partners and supporters gathered Friday to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the new Early Childhood Enrichment Clubhouse — a long-awaited investment in childcare and early learning for the region.
Just blocks away, and moments later, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe itself marked several milestones of its own.
Tribal leaders broke ground on two major projects — a new Tribal Administration building and a Wellness Center — both years in the making and long discussed as part of the tribe’s vision for the future. The groundbreaking, held at 1 p.m. along Broad Avenue, was timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the tribe’s formal federal recognition.
Together, tribal leaders say the projects signal continued investment not only in infrastructure, but in services, health and long-term community growth. The day’s events carried into the evening with a meal Wacipi at the Community Center.
Tribal leaders are also expected to share updates in the coming weeks on the long-anticipated rebuild of the Crescent Street bridge over the Big Sioux River — a project that will restore a direct connection between the community, the north side of town, and the Flandreau Indian School campus.
