Flandreau coach makes his best catch yet

Marquelle Edlund didnt think much of the contractions that started picking up late last month. Her first two children, Kerby and Mylah, had been long labors, stretching over days. She figured baby number three would be the same.

But Maverick had other plans.

Our BOY! Maverick Joshua Edlund came fast and furious at 5:32 a.m. yesterday morning (August 27), in the car, caught by his daddy. 8 lbs, 15 oz., Marquelle posted the next day on Facebook.

The evening before, her contractions were somewhat steady. By 2 a.m., they were five minutes apart. A warm bath turned into her water breaking. The couple called a friend to watch the kids and headed for the hospital.

Pretty much we were out the door within a half hour and we did not make it all the way, we made it to the hospital parking lot, Marquelle said with a smile.

Josh had phoned ahead to Avera, warning the crew the baby might not wait. Staff were waiting at the ER doors. But Josh went to the wrong entrance, and by the time went to call for help and got back to the car, there was no time left to wait for help.

The baby was crowning. Marquelle pushed.

I was a little worried because the umbilical cord was around its neck like twice, so that was kind of scary, but I learned later thats pretty normal, Josh said. Im just thankful for the adrenaline, because I never thought about it. I never had too much time to think, it was more just a reaction.

Marquelle used a sweater to rub Maverick down, and soon he was crying strong. The ER crew reached them within minutes.

A Registered Nurse herself, Marquelle said she never panicked. She stayed calm, focused, and cared for her son.

I feel like God prepped me for that situation beforehand. I feel each of our kids, I felt pulled to scripture to pray over my labor and our child and probably a week before he was born, I felt God calling on me to 2 Timothy 1:7 which is for God gave us a spirit not of fear but power so I feel like that prepared me that way.

Josh, Flandreau Fliers head football coach, health and physical education teacher, and new athletic director, laughed that it was his best catch ever.

I delivered a baby, he said.

Hes one-upped me, Marquelle replied.
