FIS looking for volunteers as enrollment rebounds

Flandreau Indian School is asking for a little extra help this year. With more students back on campus and federal budgets that remain tight, staff say volunteers will be key in getting everyone through the school year.
About 160 students have returned for the 2025-26 academic year the highest number since COVID forced the school to go to online learning in 2020. Staff say it feels good to see momentum building again.
The challenge now is making sure every student gets the support they need. Many of the young people who come to FIS are far from home. Families who have entrusted the school with their children, along with teachers and administrators, describe FIS as both life-saving and life-changing a place where students find stability, opportunity, and a safe home away from home. Volunteers, they say, can play a big part in that.
There are plenty of ways to pitch in including opportunities in: dorms, athletics, and recreation. Tutoring, mentoring, helping with activities, or simply being another trusted adult students can count on are additional opportunities that might exist. Something as simple as showing up regularly can make a lasting difference.
In recent years, the school has invested in upgrading classrooms, dorms, and common spaces. The goal is to create not only a stronger academic experience but also a comfortable, safe environment where students feel supported. Administrators say the updates are helping, but what matters most now is people.
Anyone interested in lending a hand can reach out to Shawn Dahmen with FIS Human Resources at (605) 997-3773. A background check and some quick paperwork are required before opportunities begin.
