Flandreau welcomes all to 2025 Wacipi

The annual Flandreau Santee Sioux Wacipi returns to Flandreau this weekend, July 18-20, 2025.
A reminder that this longtime traditional event is open to all tribal members and visitors alike. The opportunity offers a chance for all to experience the richness of indigenous culture through dance, music, storytelling, food, and crafts.
The Wacipi also offers a chance to connect others across the community, meet new people who have come in from across the state and region, and learn about traditions passed down through generations. Youll have the chance to enjoy performances from dancers and drummers, try a variety of traditional foods, and browse local crafts showcasing the talents of artists from the powwow community.
For those new to powwows, here are a few simple guidelines to help ensure everyone has a great experience:
Elders are highly respected in Native American communities, so be sure to show special respect throughout the event.
The Dancing Circle is sacred, so respect for that space is also important.
Photography is generally allowed, but always ask before taking photos, especially during dances or when capturing someones regalia (traditional attire).
Traditional dress is welcome, and a respectful, open-minded attitude is encouraged.
No drugs or alcohol are permitted on the event grounds.
No firearms or fireworks are allowed for safety reasons.
During dance or drum circles, its important to remain silent as the performances are sacred.
Participation in Dances and Circles: Unless invited, its customary to remain outside the dancing circle. Some powwows invite non-Native participants to join in specific dances, but these will be clearly announced.
Other notes, the Grand Entry will take place on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. This is a special moment to witness the ceremonial start of the powwow and see all the dancers in their beautiful regalia.
A walk/run will take place Saturday morning at 8 a.m., starting at the Wicoicaga Community Center, and a softball tournament will be held on Saturday in honor of Miles Roy.
Saturday at 11:30 a.m., there is a special honoring for local tribal member Bruce Allen.
The weekend will culminate in a fireworks display on Saturday evening. For updates and more details, follow along on social media using #wakpaipaksun2025, #CelebrateTogether, and #CulturalJoy.
