Noem Confirmation Hearing early Wednesday

Kristi Noem will appear before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs this Wednesday as part of her confirmation process to become the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
While her nomination has sparked some debate, she is largely expected to be confirmed, and the process is anticipated to move quickly.
Noem, who has served as South Dakotas governor since 2019 and previously represented the state in Congress, was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the federal agency responsible for overseeing key national security efforts, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The South Dakota Democratic Party raised concerns in December about Noems qualifications following the announcement of her appointment.
Her years as South Dakotas governor have proven that she is not equipped to lead such a critical department that safeguards the security of the American people, Merrill said.
Despite the pushback, Noems strong stance on immigration and border security aligns closely with Trumps priorities. If confirmed, she would oversee some of the most vital agencies within the federal government, tasked with protecting the nation and its citizens.
A confirmation would also pave the way for Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden to take over as governor later this month, finishing out Noems term, which is set to end in January 2027.
Noems confirmation hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday and will be available to watch live on the Senate Homeland Security Committees official website at hsgac.senate.gov. She is expected to be introduced by Senator John Thune and Representative Dusty Johnson.
