Foot traffic at the Flandreau Farmers Market is growing each week as locals visit the markets new location this summer, and as vendors bring in their first round of vegetables harvested from gardens across the region.
More than a dozen area bakers, gardeners, farmers, crafters, and artisans are making the market on the east edge of town their home for the season. This year, in partnership with the Moody County Museum, the market is located on the museum grounds each Thursday night from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
While some are questioning the new location, including a recent social media post that generated a great deal of discussion over where the market might best be located, vendors collectively decided earlier this year to try it in hopes of attracting more people not only to the market but also to the Thursday night concert series held each summer by the Flandreau City Band.
It isnt certain that the Market will remain in that location after this summer, but organizers and vendors are searching for patron feedback.
Among the challenges some say the new location presents all of the vendors are located in the grass, making it difficult for some, especially the elderly, to feel sure-footed and walk through the market.
Others, such as Judy Wilts, commented, Enjoying this location. Grandkids did a scavenger hunt in the museum, browsed the market, listened to the band!! A great way to spend the evening.
The bandshell, for those who have never attended a summer concert, is an open-air performance center. Performances are free and entertaining to listeners of all ages, with local musicians volunteering their time for generations. The property, for those wanting to take in a concert and a market night, is adjacent to The Spot Drive-In and the museum grounds off Pipestone Avenue just east of downtown.
There are two remaining Thursday night concerts, on August 1 and August 8, but the market will continue through fall with another big end-of-season celebration planned. Further details on the event will be announced once finalized.
