Two local homeschool students are stepping into new roles this winter — not just on stage, but behind the scenes.
Rehearsals have been underway since November for an independent production of “The Day the Crayons Quit,” directed by Hannah Ehrichs, 14, and Arianna Meyer, 13, both of Flandreau. The pair, longtime participants in productions at the Crystal Theatre, said they were wanting to learn what it takes to build a show from the ground up.
The play, based on the popular children’s book by Drew Daywalt and adapted for stage by local actor and theater supporter Emily Pieper, tells the story of crayons who quit after feeling overused — or ignored — by their owner, Duncan.
“I really liked choreographing the songs. That was fun,” Ehrichs said. “And also, the audition was fun; I liked watching everyone say the lines and deciding who would be best at which part.”
Arianna agreed.
“I love just acting in the theater, making big expressions and also seeing other people act as well. It just makes me happy.”
The 30- to 45-minute production this coming weekend will feature more than 20 area youth, mostly ages 10 to 14, along with two adults. Cast members come from Moody County and nearby communities, including Dell Rapids.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Crystal Theatre.
Proceeds will help support a band trip for the Piepers’ daughter, Mia — a cause the young directors said they were happy to rally behind.
As this is a personal fundraiser, Crystal Theatre season tickets do not apply. Tickets for the play are available at the door.
