Two girls move on to State Wrestling

ELK POINT – Chelsey Marquez at 100 and Rory Thielsen at 155, both first year wrestlers, are the two Fliers who placed in the Region 2B Girls tournament held Thursday, Feb. 19 earning the opportunity to wrestle in their first state tournament this weekend in Sioux Falls.
Seventh grader Marquez and freshman Thielsen both placed fourth. Freshman Tenley Quick placed fifth in Regions and will be an alternate at the State Meet.
“These girls showed up,” said Coach Chamblin. “And punched that ticket to Sioux Falls.”
Marquez had the fullest region bracket with 11 wrestlers. She took a bye, and then won over Downs of Marion Freeman before losing to the top seed, Gannon of Canton. She then defeated a Dakota Valley wrestler but fell in the third place match to Rinoah Gabriel of Brandon Valley by fall.
In the opening round, Faith Slavin defeated Thielsen dropping the Flier to the wrestlebacks. Here Thielsen won over a Brandon Valley opponent putting her against Slavin again. She lost by fall to take fourth.
Quick opened regions with two pins but then lost to girls from Sioux Falls Washington and Canton. She came back and pinned her final opponent from Harrisburg to take fifth.
Marquez is seeded 14th and faces Shaylee Speck of Pierre the three seed. Thielsen was seeded 13th and will tackle fourth seed Katie Snyder of Hot Springs to open the tourney.
The girls regions and state tournaments are combined with all girls in both the Class A and B wrestling in the same class.
