A few downtown Flandreau property owners have reported both break-ins and vandalism in recent weeks. City leaders say the incidents appear minor but are being addressed. The discussion comes as another round of nuisance-property checks is imminent, with several downtown buildings drawing extra attention as potential structural issues are raised.
Mayor Dan Sutton and City Administrator Cohl Turnquist shared the update at the most recent meeting of the Flandreau City Council, noting that police are working the cases. They also acknowledged concerns about a handful of buildings downtown and said the city will keep property owners in the loop as follow-ups continue.
Also heard at the most recent meeting of the Flandreau City Council:
The spring election date will move to June. The council approved Ordinance 633, which shifts municipal elections to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June. The change is meant to align better with other election calendars and improve turnout.
Ambulance fees were adopted as the city prepares to assume service. As the City of Flandreau prepares to take over the countys ambulance service at the start of the year, the council amended and then approved Resolution 2025-11 to formally set ambulance fees and clarify that the City will operate the service. (More on staffing, coverage and response plans in an upcoming issue.)
A new housing development is still in the works. Sutton reported the Broad Avenue housing project remains in progress, and the hope is that the city will break ground on a new and much-needed affordable-housing apartment complex early next year.
A request for funding a new ROCS vehicle gets a partial match. The city received a special request from ROCS for a $15,000 match toward a new van, in addition to $9,000 previously requested for operations. The council approved $7,500 toward the match, contingent on ROCS securing the full required local share.
Local sales tax numbers are on track. City Administrator Cohl Turnquist presented third-quarter sales tax numbers; if current trends hold through Q4, the City is on pace to meet its 2025 sales-tax revenue budget, important to note as new commitments, such as the ambulance, come online in 2026.
