Good news for homeowners and commuters along the south side of Flandreau: the continued stretch of mild fall weather is likely to give contractors a few extra weeks to keep working on the citys major water utility improvement project and the rebuilding of affected roads.
Crews had been expected to wrap up for the year by October 31 under the current contract with the City, but IMEG Engineer Shane Waterman told city council members this past week that contractors are eager to take advantage of the extended construction season.
The goal get as much underground work and grading completed as possible before winter shuts things down.
Waterman said utility installation is now focused on the south block of Prairie Street, with grading crews covering four total blocks. Concrete work is scheduled to begin during the first week of November. If the weather holds, work could extend into mid-November, with final cleanup targeted for Thanksgiving.
Council members approved the request. Waterman also reviewed snow-removal procedures for the affected neighborhoods to make sure residents can safely access their homes while work areas remain closed or partially restored.
The project part of a multi-year effort to replace aging water and sewer lines and improve storm drainage across Flandreau has been going on for years. Frequent breaks and maintenance calls have underscored the need for the upgrade.
Once completed, residents can expect new water mains, curbs and gutters, fresh pavement, and improved sidewalk accessibility.
