COLMAN Colman-Egan hosted the number one team in Class 9B on Friday to open the season.
The Avon Pirates lasted the Hawks, 60-38, as the two schools battled in a shootout on Friday night.
Avon opened a big lead early as Aziah Meyer scored on a three-yard touchdown with 6:20 left in the first quarter and on a 28-yard run with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
Landon Mudder put the Pirates up 18-0 with 6:01 left in the second quarter before Sutton Bunde scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left in the second quarter.
The Hawks got another touchdown when Hayden Pearson connected to Jackson Zwart on a five-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the second quarter and Pearson threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Zwart with 11:02 left in the third quarter but Mayer swung momentum back in the Pirates direction with a 77-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Mayer added a 51-yard touchdown run with 5:01 left in the third quarter and after Pearson ripped off a 28-yard touchdown run, Mayer added a 66-yard kick return for a touchdown with 4:46 training.
Grayson Tatzloff scored from 15 yards out with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter before Pederson scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds remaining in the game.
Pearson gained 87 yards on 15 carries with a rushing touchdown for the Hawks while Bunde had 37 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Pearson completed 10-of-20 passes for 122 yards and a pair of interceptions. Zwart caught four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
Meyer ran for 161 yards on 19 carries with six touchdowns. Grayson Ratzlaff ran for 103 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown.
C-E will host Canistota, ranked number 2, at 7 p.m. on Friday. Results in the September 11 issue of the Enterprise due to Labor Day holiday deadline.
