VOLGA – In one of the smaller meets of the season on the Flandreau Flier track and field schedule, the Fliers saw great success on the track and swept a couple of the events top placings. The Sioux Valley Invitational was held Tuesday, May 5 under cool windy conditions.
Host Sioux Valley won the invitational with the boys scoring 276 points and the girls, 218.5. The Flier boys came in a distant second with their score of 115 and DeSmet was third at 102.
The Flier girls came in third (86.5) behind second place DeSmet at 195 and ahead of fourth palce Oldham-Ramona-Rutland and Iroquois/Lake Preston who tied at 56 points a piece.
The Flier girls 200 meter runners made a clean sweep of the top three placings. Kiley Westberry won the race in a time 27.5 followed by fellow Fliers Rhegan Sheppard at 27.62 and Ella Hoffman at 28.15 in second and third.
Hoffman also won the 100 meter race at 13.47 and Westberry came in second in the 400 meter dash with her time of 1:04.05. Sheppard took third at 1:04.94 and Tenley LeBrun was fifth at 1:06.49.
In the distance races, LeBrun won the 3200 meter run at 13:06.80, Willow Stephens was second in the 1600 at 5:55.88 and Hailey Lahr was sixth in the 800, 3:09.98.
In the field events, Lahr took fifth in the javelin at 74’2” and Rylah Otto finished fourth in the high jump at 4’.
In the boys division on the track, the Fliers were sweeping again as they took the top five medals in the 800 meter run. First was Sam Schmidt at 2:16.44, second was Wyatt Kontz at 2:18.33, Nate Hobbie was third with a time of 2:18.46, Jake Hamilton placed four, 2:18.54 and Nathan Ross was fifth in a time of 2:20.38.
Also, four of the five Flier runners in the 1600 meter run placed in the top six. Hobbie (4:56.85) and Schmidt (4:58.73) crossed the finish line as one and two, Logan Kontz was fourth at 5:15.68 and Franklin Donis Castillo was sixth at 5:25.37.
Taking first in the 100 meter dash was sophomore Jacob Mohr with a time of 11.8. Jake Hamilton was fifth at 12:09 and Elijah Johnson sixth at 12:10 for the Fliers.
Mohr also placed second in the 200 with a time of 24.49 and Titus Tollefson and Luke Sheppard were fourth and fifth at 24.71 and 25.09 respectively. Senior Wyatt Kontz placed fourth in the opening quarter, 56.61 and Tollefson was fifth, 56.89.
The Flier had four place winners in the field events. Tucker Hemmer leaped to 18’10.25” for third, Nathan Ross high jumped to fourth at 5’4” and Kalel Bamba jumped 5’0” for sixth, while Xavier Bien tossed the discus 120’2” for sixth.
Neither Flier team fielded a foursome in any relays.
