Four take third at Wagner invite

WAGNER – Flandreau placed ninth and had four wrestlers place third at the Tom Studelska Invitational in Wagner on Saturday, one of the more highly competitive tournaments on the Flier schedule.
This was the lone competition for the Fliers last week.
The Fliers scored 76 points falling just behind host Wagner’s 78. Bon Homme-Avon won the invitational with 255 points.
Placing second through sixth was Tri-Valley, Canton, Kimball-White Lake/Platte-Geddes, Parkston and Faulkton.
“The boys team placed five in a field of kids in which every bracket had multiple state-ranked kids placed in it,” said Coach Cody Chamblin.
Taking third for the Fliers was Teague Bergjord at 126, Gabe Frias at 132, Zach Pederson at 138 and Justin Klein at 175.
“These four all fell in the semis,” said Chamblin.
“Each had either a 1st or 2nd ranked kid in the state and all four pushed them to the limit. (These four final matches were won via decision). This is showing we are right there and can compete with the best.”
In the third place matches:
Bergjord defeated the second seed Cash Edgar of Faulkton Area in a 7-0 match.
Frias topped Parkston’s Kiptyn Schaefers, 8-2 and Pederson won over Logun Pankratz of Marion-Freeman, 8-4.
Justin Klein overcame Thayne Tjeerdsma of Wagner, 9-7.
Also placing for the Flier team was senior Tom Loehr who finished sixth at 285.
Tom knocked off the number one seed,” said Chamblin.
“It’s nice having him back on the mat and to get his ending season push.”
“This team is wrestling well and peaking at the right time and I am super excited for the month of February push.”
The Flier girls were in Brookings on Saturday. Tenley Quick (4th) and Chelsey Marquez (6th) placed for the Fliers. Quick recorded a 3-2 mark and Marquez went 3-3. Rory Thielsen and Grace Klein also wrestled for the Fliers.
“These girls have one more big tournament in Yankton on Friday before Regions in two weeks,” noted Chamblin.
Flandreau hosted a Parent Night quad on Tuesday and will host another quad on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday’s quad will be senior night and be the final competition in the home gym for seniors Bergjord, Dalin Billmeier, Klein, Preston Meyer and Loehr. Thursday will also be autograph night.
“We will also have a benefit for Sutton Murphy on Thursday night. Sutton, a Kingsbury County wrestler, suffered a severe spinal injury earlier this month. We would like to fill the Flier stands to show Sutton and his family support from our community,” said Chamblin.
Saturday, they’ll be in Clear Lake for the Big East/Lake Central Conference meet looking for wrestlers to become All-Conference.
