Margo Heinert presented the board and school district with a star quilt when she ended her year as interim high school principal for Flandreau High School.

“This was an awesome year for me, I loved it here,” Heinert said.

The quilt features the school’s colors of purple, yellow and white as well as the school’s mission: Empowering all students to become learners and leaders in a diverse and dynamic world.

Heinert, who married into a traditional Lakota family and has spent most of her life on a reservation, said in their culture, star quilts are traditionally given for rites of passage, like marriages, but also in celebration.
