Dale M. Olson, 92, Flandreau, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Riverview Healthcare Community, Flandreau.

Dale was born October 8, 1925 in Sioux Falls, SD, to Julius B. and Ona Mae (Woodruff) Olson. His family lived in Tea, SD, where he attended school through the eighth grade. Dale graduated from Lennox High School in 1943 where he was active in sports and played French horn in the band. During high school he worked for his dad at the Olson Grain Co. in Tea. Then he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for 2 ½ years. Dale married Mert Barnes on October 11, 1947 at St. John’s Parsonage in Sioux Falls. They lived and worked in El Cajon, CA, and Sioux Falls where Dale was a bank teller and later a Red Star Yeast salesman. In 1960 they moved to Flandreau after purchasing the Coast-to-Coast Store. They sold the business in 1970 and Dale was a car salesman for a few years. Then he was an insurance agent for many years until his retirement. Dale was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Kiwanis and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Mertendale spent their summers in the Black Hills where they enjoyed sharing their love for the Hills with the family. He enjoyed golfing, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and woodworking. Dale looked forward to hunting trips with his buddies in the Black Hills and camping trips with his family. He passed their Norwegian heritage and traditions, including the love of lefse, on to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

Dale is survived by two daughters: Jo Barboza, Kamuela, HI and Jackie (Mike) Skroch, Flandreau; six grandchildren: Akamu (Jenn) Barboza, Mara Paio, Natalie (Ricco) Schmidt, Marty (Katie) Skroch, Maren (Tim) McCleish and Sam (Kelli) Olson; 12 great grandchildren: Logan, Marley and Healani Barboza, Nainoa Paio, Steven, Nathan and Mallorie Schmidt,  Emmett Skroch, Mackson and Monroe McCleish, Teagan and Jaylee Olson;  two sisters-in-law: Corinne Barnes and Joyce Olson, both of Sioux Falls. 

Services will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau with burial in Union Cemetery, Flandreau. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. www.skrochfc.com
