For the first time in decades, downtown Flandreau played host to a car show Saturday, with close to 50 vehicles lining Second Avenue.
Organizer Brian Hammer said people have asked him over the years to help put together some sort of local car event, and he finally decided it was time.
Hammer was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, although, understanding the car community in Flandreau and throughout the region, he felt that many might show up. A car enthusiast himself, Hammer owns a few vehicles of his own.
For several hours, people walked through downtown checking out the cars, grabbing a bite to eat or a cold beverage and stopping to visit with old friends. Many also sought out whatever shade they could find as temperatures climbed into the upper 80s around the time the show began.
With the first event now behind him, Hammer is already looking ahead. He said he is considering possibly organizing a fall drive and bringing the downtown car show back again next year.
