If you’re looking for things to do this summer, the calendar is quickly filling up across Moody County. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the area’s upcoming events:
H June 14 is Egan’s Flag Day Celebration, which will also serve as the community’s kickoff to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The event will feature a patriotic parade, worship service, food vendors, entertainment, children’s activities and more.
H Flandreau Fridays follows on June 19, bringing music, food, cultural performances and family activities to downtown Flandreau as the community celebrates its diverse cultural heritage.
H July 1 sees the return of downtown Flandreau’s second annual summer concert series. More details will be announced in the coming weeks, but Sound of the Stone is scheduled to kick off the weekly music series at 7 p.m. Organizers encourage attendees to bring a lawn chair and enjoy food or refreshments from one of the downtown businesses while taking in the show.
H July 3 will offer a variety of events throughout the county. In Colman, community members will celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary with a full day of activities centered around the city park and golf course. Meanwhile, a concert featuring Kory and the Fireflies is said to be planned for Flandreau City Park. The event posting online states it is being hosted by the Japanese Gardens, which is owned by the City of Flandreau but currently operated by Kyle and Wendi Haug.
H The Moody County Museum’s annual Fourth of July celebration returns July 4 with activities throughout the day commemorating the nation’s birthday. Fireworks are also typically hosted at dusk by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe in the field adjacent to Royal River Casino and Hotel.
H Later in the month, the annual Flandreau Santee Sioux Wacipi will be held at the powwow grounds north of Flandreau during the third weekend of July. The event kicks off with Grand Entry on Friday evening and continues through Sunday. The powwow is open to the public and welcomes visitors from throughout the region.
H A Car Show will be sponsored by local car enthusiasts on July 18 in downtown Flandreau
H Election season also arrives in July, with the Republican runoff election for governor scheduled for July 28. Early voting begins this Friday.
H The Moody County 4-H Fair returns July 30 through Aug. 1, bringing livestock shows, exhibits, entertainment and youth activities to the fairgrounds.
H Summer celebrations continue Aug. 7-9 with Looney Days in Flandreau, featuring community traditions, entertainment and activities for all ages.
Of course, these are just some of the larger events planned throughout the summer. Golf outings, live music performances, fundraisers, reunions, community gatherings and other special events are happening as well throughout the county. Along the way, don’t forget to support the many local small businesses hoping to see a little extra foot traffic as residents and visitors make their way from one event to the next.
