Flier girls seventh in Class A State T&F meet

SIOUX FALLS – The Flandreau Flier girls track and field team combined for 32 points to place seventh at the 2026 South Dakota High School Activities Association’s Class A meet held May 28-30 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with 168 points, outperforming in nearly all running events and placing in four of the seven field events. Lennox, Dakota Valley, Elk-Point Jefferson and Custer came in two through five. Belle Fourche was sixth and the Fliers came in seventh at 32 points, just a point ahead of Parker in eighth.

In her final individual event as a high school runner, Flandreau’s Faith Wiese at left, stays with the leaders. The girls finished the race just as they were seeded with Ellie Maddox of Sioux Falls Christian earning first, Alex McCullough of Dakota Valley came in second, Wiese was third and Sadie Pettengill of SFC was fourth.


Faith Wiese concluded her high school track season winning four medals earning three second place finishes and a fourth.
In a finals race on Thursday, the 1600 sprint medley relay team of Rhegan Sheppard, Morgan Sheppard, Kiley Westberry and Wiese took silver with a time of 4:10.49.
On Friday morning, Wiese took second in the 3200 meter run clocking a time of 10:54.77 and then on Saturday afternoon, in her final solo race, she placed fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:05.60.
Also on Friday, the 4×400 relay preliminary team of Kiley Westberry, Ella Hoffman, Rhegan Sheppard and Wiese notched a school record time of 4:04.32 to advance to the finals. On Saturday, the team capped the weekend off – nearly matching their prelim time – cruising to a 4:04.57 and taking second. The relay race ended the high school track careers of Hoffman and Wiese.
In other events, the 4×200 relay team took a hard loss after running to ninth in the prelims. Westberry, Hoffman and sisters Rhegan and Morgan Sheppard turned in a score of 1:47.29, but did not make finals.
The foursome of Westberry, Rona Streitz, Tenley LeBrun and Hoffman recorded a respectable time but came in 13th with a 52.09, just .01 off a team’s previous season best of 52.08.

Flier eighth grader Rhegan Sheppard triple jumped into the top 10 at Flandreau and placed sixth in the Class A meet. She jumped 34’10.25” to become number 2 all time for the Flier girls.


Rhegan Sheppard outperformed her seed and picked a good time to jump her season’s best triple jump of 34’ 10.25” to place sixth. The leap also moves her up in the top 10 Flier girls jump to number two behind Mona Zephier’s 36’ ½”. She was the only Flier girl to place in the field events.

Flier Jake Hamilton celebrates his personal best and record-tying leap at the State A Pole Vault finals. He cleared 12’9” to tie a 1983 record from 1983. The Flier placed sixth at state. Pole vault was brought back to the Flier program just five years ago.

The lone boy to place was Jake Hamilton who surpassed his previous top performance in pole vault with a sixth place vault of 12’9”, tying a long-standing school record set in 1983 by Chuck Derdall. Hamilton ended last season at 9’6”, improved his pole vaulting little by little throughout the year and went into state with his personal best height of 12’1” surpassing his state seeding.
Other Flier state participants were Nathan Ross in high jump, Schmidt in pole vault and Micah Kills-A-Hundred in the pole vault, Tenley LeBrun and Logan Kontz in the 3200, the 4×800 relay teams of (girls) LeBrun, Willow Stephens, Streitz and Genesis Martinez-Soto and (boys) Sam Schmidt, Nate Hobbie, Logan Kontz and Wyatt Kontz.
Hoffman, Kontz and Wiese concluded their prep careers.
