Cardinals drop opener
DELL RAPIDS – After leading 5-3 after two innings, the Cardinals allowed Dell Rapids PBR to score 15 runs while only adding a couple more to the tally sheet in an 18-7 season and Corn Belt League opening game.
PBR batted out 22 hits with 13 of them against Cardinal pitcher Kasen Grengs who took the loss. Flandreau used three pitchers and were only able to strike out one Dells batter in 45 plate appearances.
Flandreau did have some highlights with a pair of home runs each by Mitchel Foster and JaColby Anderson. Doubles came off the bats of Beau Severtson, Austin Koenig and Luke Gassman. Anderson had a pair of RBI. The Cardinals committed three errors.
Monday, the Cardinals played a makeup game with H/H Gamecocks and will be at Salem on Thursday. Sunday, the team hosts Canova at 5 p.m. after the Blue Teal’s game with Salem which is at 2 p.m.
Blue Teal handed first loss
FLANDREAU – Hartford/Humboldt’s Wood Ducks busted open the game against the Flandreau Blue Teal on Thursday taking a 15-8 win.
Flandreau held a 4-3 lead going into the top of the seventh inning when the Wood Ducks’ bats scored 10 runs and then added two more in the eighth.
The Teal struck out 16 times and walked 12. Kolby Peters took a free base three times and then stole two bases while Michael Witte hit 3 for 4 – all singles – earning two RBI and scoring two runs.
In the batter’s box, Tash Lunday had a three hit night with a double and two singles. Tristan Peters doubled and had a one-base hit and Micah Otto earned two RBI off one hit.
From the mound, Emmott Nathan was the losing pitcher. The Blue Teal defense created five errors allowing 10 runs off seven hits.
The Blue Teal now posts a season record of 3-1 and will host the Madison Broncos on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the Salem Cubs on Sunday in a 2 p.m. contest. Following that game, the Flandreau Cardinals will play Canova at 5 p.m.
