Same summer fun, new home

Summer recreational programs in Flandreau will look familiar this year — despite the program being under new leadership.
As we mentioned just over a month ago, the Boys & Girls Club of Moody County has officially taken over the city’s summer rec program, a move city and club leaders say made sense for local families, kids and staff already working closely together through the summer months.
The transition followed the departure of previous director Emma Peters and no one else stepping into the role. Peters had resigned to spend more time with family and travel, along with concerns that hiring and scheduling umpires for summer ball games had become part of the position in a way she no longer felt fit the role.
Club leaders, along with Peters — who is now helping the Boys & Girls Club with the program — say they are excited to keep the longtime summer offering going.
“We are very excited to be taking over this program,” said unit director Keilani Klimczuk.
“We are always happy to work with the city and are happy we could help.”
For families, the biggest changes will be location and registration. Club leaders said the same camps families have come to expect will continue, but summer rec activities will now be based through the Boys & Girls Club. The option to attend camps at no additional cost has also been built into the club’s summer membership rate.
Klimczuk said she hopes the move will allow more children to participate and open the door for additional camps in future summers, including offerings that reach a broader range of interests.
Families can register online by creating an account through the Caregiver Portal, MyClubHub, at greatfuturessd.org. Paper registration forms also are available at the Boys & Girls Club of Moody County, 803 W. Community Drive in Flandreau.
The registration deadline is June 1, with payment due at the time of registration.
