As preparations ramp up for this summer’s Moody County Fair, county commissioners have approved hiring a temporary part-time assistant to help support the local 4-H program — particularly during the busy fair season.
The discussion has surfaced over the past two county commission meetings as officials considered whether additional help was needed to support new 4-H Program Assistant Tyenna Muller during her first fair season in the role.
Commission assistant Marty Skroch said the proposed position would allow for up to 100 hours of part-time help at $20 an hour, with a straight salary maximum of $2,000, not including payroll taxes.
Most of those hours would be used in the week leading up to the fair, during the fair itself, and potentially later in August to assist with State Fair responsibilities — similar to how previous support roles had functioned.
Commissioners noted that while the extension office has had part-time help in past years, the arrangement was never formally budgeted as a designated position.
For Muller, the need goes beyond fair week.
While this year’s request is focused on seasonal support, she said having additional adult help throughout the year could strengthen local programming.
“When I host day camps or workshops, clover buds, any of that, I need two adults per one member for each member. That’s the context.
So in the future, if this goes over well, if we have room in the budget, I would love to increase their hours. That way, you know, two or three times a month, I am guaranteed to have an adult with me when I do those workshops and Cloverbuds events.”
This year’s Moody County Fair runs July 30 through Aug. 1.
Also at the meeting, commissioners began discussion around nuisance ordinance enforcement following recent complaints and questions about consistency at the county level. More on that conversation in a future edition.
