Voters in the City of Egan and Ward Town will be the only ones casting ballots in contested municipal races this June.
In Egan, Nancy Hansen and Karlie TenEyck filed for the Trustee 5 seat, currently held by longtime Trustee Jerome Olson, who did not seek re-election. Hansen currently holds the Trustee 4 position. Allen Loehr was the lone filer for the Trustee 4 position. From the election results, the top two vote receivers will fill the two open at large seats. Both trustee positions carry three-year terms.
Ward’s election will feature one contested seat, with incumbent Arlette Reeves facing challenger Byron Pals.
In Flandreau, no petition was filed for the Ward I Alderman seat. The city council will appoint someone to fill the position, which is being vacated by Karen Tufty.
In Ward II and Ward III, incumbents Curt Ahlers and Tim Yeaton each filed and will retain their seats. All Flandreau council positions are four-year terms.
Neither local school district will hold a contested election — in Flandreau, incumbent Morgan Kontz and newcomer Katie Muller filed for two open seats, while Tom Stenger did not seek re-election.
At Colman-Egan, incumbents Dan Bowen and Jennifer Keyes both filed and will remain on the board. All school board positions are three-year terms.
The City of Colman and Town of Trent will hold their municipal elections in November, so petitions may not yet been taken out or filed.
The spring election is set for June 2, which also serves as the primary election date.
In Moody County, ballots will include several additional races depending on the precinct, including Republican primaries for Governor, District 25 House, County Commission Districts 3 and 5, and local party precinct positions.
School and municipal questions will appear only for voters within those specific districts. Additional items on some ballots include a school board race in the Oldham-Ramona-Rutland District, a school board race in Brookings, and a ballot question in Flandreau regarding a proposed reduction in the size of the school board (see related story).
County Commission seats in Districts 1, 3 and 5 are four-year terms. District 2 is currently a two-year term and will return to a four-year cycle in 2028.
Absentee voting begins April 17. All Flandreau precincts will vote at the Boys and Girls Club’s new gymnasium.
More on several of these races including those up for election at the courthouse and ballot items will be included in future editions of the Moody County Enterprise.
