State education officials are expected to visit the Flandreau Indian School next week, with a scheduled stop Thursday, April 2 at 11 a.m.
According to school officials, approximately 20 to 25 representatives from the South Dakota Department of Education will be on campus for a tour and to learn more about the school and its history.
Flandreau Indian School has served Native students from across the country for generations and continues to play an important role for many families. While enrollment dipped during the COVID-19 pandemic, numbers have begun to rebound — something school leaders attribute in part to the quality of education offered along with a major campus renovation project. Updates to student housing, academic spaces and activity areas have helped expand opportunities for students and enhanced day-to-day life on campus.
The visit is expected to include time with staff and students, offering state leaders a closer look at the school’s programs, facilities and continued growth.
While details of the visit are limited, it comes at a time when conversations around education and student opportunities continue to evolve across the state and nation, and at a time others are looking to FIS for what it is able to offer. More on the visit, in an upcoming edition.
