Dry, windy conditions keep fire danger high

A fire that could have easily gotten away from fire crews but didn’t over the past weekend is a reminder that current fire danger is considered high to very high, and the county is under an elevated risk of fire due to extremely dry conditions and local wind events.
Fire officials across eastern South Dakota continue to urge caution, noting that dormant grasses, low humidity and frequent winds are creating conditions where fires can ignite quickly and spread rapidly. Even small sparks — from equipment, vehicles or controlled burns — can escalate within minutes.
While no widespread damage was reported in the most recent incident, responders say it highlights just how fast conditions can change this time of year.
All are encouraged to avoid open burning when possible and to closely monitor conditions, as burn restrictions can change quickly.
A late-winter system may progress through the area midweek potentially bringing periods of rain, snow, and a wintry mix.
