While March continues to make up its mind about whether winter is finished, things are already well underway inside the warm walls of Iott’s Greenhouse.
Owners Nancy and Chris Iott, along with their team of family, friends and longtime helpers, have been busy behind the scenes getting early plantings into the dirt and preparing the greenhouse for another season of color, flowers and gardens. Here Casey Martin and Loretta Iott prune.
Trays of young plants are already stretching toward the light while temperatures stay comfortably warm — a welcome contrast to the still-unpredictable and single-digit temperatures outside earlier this week.
Each year, much of the early work happens quietly in the weeks leading up to opening day, as seeds are started, hanging baskets are prepared and rows of plants begin to fill the greenhouse.
The official start of spring arrives Friday, March 20 at 9:46 a.m.
The greenhouse is expected to officially open for the season on April 20.
