For the first time in nearly two decades, the Colman-Egan Hawks girls basketball team is headed back to the state tournament under the leadership of first year head coach, Josh Flatten.
It’s a goal the program has chased for years. Coaches say coming into this season they believed the opportunity was there if the girls played to their potential — individually and together.
“These girls have put in years of hard work … seeing them finally get the opportunity to live out their dream of playing in the state tournament is something really special,” said Brandi Landis, mother of player Brynlee Landis.
“So much has gone well this season, team chemistry, leadership, and the girls’ willingness to buy into the system and trust one another. If they continue to play with confidence, stay disciplined, and lean on the teamwork that got them here, they absolutely have what it takes to be state champs.”
C-E Athletic Director Brandt Deutsch said countless hours of preparation led to this moment. From 6 a.m. lifting sessions and early morning practices to open gyms, summer camps and long evenings in the gym putting up shots, the players and their families made a lot of sacrifices throughout the year.
“They have earned this opportunity to play in the State Tournament,” Deutsch said. “I could not be more excited for them, this school district and the community.”
A pep rally is scheduled for Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and the team send-off is at 10 a.m. Thursday before the Hawks face No. 4 Ethan at 12:45 p.m. Theme days for fans include Jersey Day Thursday, Hawaiian Friday and Hawks Pride — black and gold — on Saturday.
The last time a C-E team played at state was 2009 when they placed sixth.
