Revenge equals a SoDak 16 invite for Hawks Girls

MADISON – Chester won the tip but Colman-Egan won the Region 3B girls basketball finale and advenged an earlier season loss to the Flyers Thursday, February 26 earning the right to attend the SoDak 16 this week.
After watching his Hawk girls be dominated by Chester Area in mid-February, and spoiling their undefeated season, Head Coach Josh Flatten, his players and a high energy Colman-Egan fan base who became the “sixth man” at Madison High School, decided it was their turn ro win.
The gym was filled with a vociferous Hawk fan base including over two dozen female fans in sparkly gold jackets, and a lively student section that urged the girls to the 49-32 win over Chester Area.
Heading into the SoDak 16, Colman-Egan, 21-1, is seeded fifth and is set to face Warner this Thursday, March 5 at the Huron Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm (following the Waubay-Summit vs. Corsica-Stickney game held there at 5:30 pm). Winners of these games earn a spot in the Girls State B Tournament to be held at First Bank and Trust Arena in Brookings on March 12-14.
In the region finale game, both teams opened the scoring slowly, but Chester found the hoop after three minutes of play. The Hawks answered with a Jolie Flatten free throw, a Brynlee Landis basket at the 3-minute mark and never looked back taking control and earning their 21st win of the season.
They went on to win the first quarter 10-4 and headed into the locker room with a 22-11 comfortable lead.
Neither team was hot from the field during the third quarter (both scored eight) as it ended 30-19, but the Hawks outdid the Flyers in the final frame, 17-13 to secure the win.
Pacing the Hawks were three players in double digits. Landis, the lone senior on the squad, led the way with 19 points and three assists. She was followed by Quinn Meyer with 13 and Flatten with 11 points. From under the hoop, center Mya Reiff was a force with 13 rebounds and aided in the win with six points.
Overall, the Hawks shot 44 percent from the field to Chester’s 24.
The Hawks held Chester’s Emmerson Eppard to 1 of 13 in field goal shooting allowing her only a basket and a free throw although she did bring down 11 rebounds. Jacy Wolf led all scorers with 20 points for Chester Area which closed the season with a respectable 19-3 record.


First round vs. Howard
COLMAN – The girls had no problems in their victory over Howard to open Region 3B winning 55-33 on their home court, Tuesday, Feb. 23.
They led after one quarter, 17-8, extending that to 27-18 at the half. In the third quarter they fired in 20 points to the Tigers’ four and followed up with eight final quarter points. The Tigers made 11 points in the last quarter.
Flatten topped all scorers with 15 points. Landis connected on 14 points and made eight assists and Meyer made 13 points. Reiff added eight points.
Leading off the boards, Landis had seven rebounds, all on defense, and Maci Voelker had six. Landis also blocked a pair of Tiger shots.
Colman-Egan shot 38 percent to the Tigers’ 29 and won the rebound battle 36-31.
