Girls post-season dashed in Region finals

The Flandreau Flier girls basketball teams’ hopes of further post-season play were dashed by Dell Rapids, Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Region 3A finals.
The Fliers won the opening round of regions 56-33 over Baltic, but then lost in the finals to Dell Rapids, 43-35.
Finals – Dell Rapids
DELL RAPIDS – Flandreau had a tough time getting the ball in the basket in the first quarter and fell behind early in the 43-35 season ending loss.
In the opening quarter, the Fliers made a few rushed shots that never found the net and fell behind, 11-5. They regrouped in the second and found themselves down by a point at the half, 17-16. The entire first half was a defensive battle for both teams.
Flandreau started the third quarter with an old fashioned three point play, but Dell Rapids rattled off eight unanswered points to end the period ahead 32-24.
The Fliers attempted a comeback and got within five, but the Quarriers held the lead for the Region 3A title.
Leading the Fliers in scoring was Morgan Sheppard with 24 points. She also made 11 rebounds. Hannah Krull followed up with nine rebounds and five assists. The Fliers were outrebounded, 40-32.
First Round–Baltic
FLANDREAU – Flandreau handily won the contest, 56-33.
Morgan Sheppard scored 25 points, made eight rebounds had four assists and three steals to lead the Flier girls. Rhegan Sheppard scored seven points and Addy Hammer and Aly Schepel both put in six Flier points. Junior Nora Hamilton gave away five assists and Schepel pulled down six boards.
Flandreau led the entire game taking the first quarter 14-2 and then set the half time score at 34-12. They finished the third quarter at 43-22.
The Flier shot 43 percent and held the Bulldogs to 27. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc with the Fliers hitting 2 of 17 and the Bulldogs, 2 of 13. Flandreau won the rebound battle 33 to 25.
The Flier defense created 12 steals and aided in 21 Bulldog turnovers.
For Baltic, Meredith Larson scored 12 points and Kate Bouman 10.
Seniors who closed out their Flandreau playing career for coach Megan Severtson are Addy Hammer, Hannah Krull, Aly Schepel and Hailey Lahr.
