Your Moody County Enterprise is celebrating the 150th anniversary of bringing you 52 weeks each year of local news in Moody County. This week’s issue begins that…dated Volume 150, Issue 1.
There’s not a lot of fanfare on our part to go with it, but we’re showing a photo of that first issue published June 27, 1878.
To put into perspective how long we’ve been in business, here’s a couple of historical facts from around the country during that time…
Residents here lived in Dakota Territory, Moody County. The county had already been established in 1873 and South Dakota became a state in 1889.
Rutherford B. Hayes was president of the United States.
The first edition of the “National Geographic” magazine was published in the United States.
The Edison Electric Light Company began commercial production of electric light bulbs.
The first successful demonstration of the phonograph by Thomas Edison took place.
The introduction of the first electric streetcar in Richmond, Virginia, revolutionized urban transport.
The first telephone exchange in the United States was established in New Haven, Connecticut.
Albert Augustus Pope’s Pope Manufacturing Company begins producing the Columbia high-wheel bicycle outside Boston, signalling the beginning of a bicycle craze in the U.S.
We’ve come a long ways since that first edition rolled off the press going from hot lead typeset with each letter placed one by one in forms and then ink applied from the press to using computers for our stories and design layout.
