Girls earn win over Bulldogs; boys take loss

FLANDREAU – The Flier basketball teams had to settle for a split when both squads hosted Baltic on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
The girls won, 58-25, but the boys fell 50-39.

Girls
The Flier girls stormed past the Baltic Bulldogs, 58-25 using four players in double figure scoring.
Flier senior Hannah Krull had 12 points and eight rebounds and eighth grader Tenley LeBrun also made 12 points in the win.
Sophomore Morgan Sheppard had 11 points and five assists and another eighth grader, Rhegan Sheppard connected on 10 points.
The Fliers led after the opening quarter, 23-6 and 34-16 at the half. They extended the led putting in 17 third quarter points and seven in the fourth holding Baltic to only nine second half scores.
From the field, the team shot 41 percent to Baltic’s 30 and had the height advantage off the glass bringing down 30 rebounds to the Bulldogs’ 20.
For Baltic, Harper Kortmeyer scored eight points and Sadey Holt had seven.
In the JV game, the Flier girls won over the Bulldogs, 27-14. Top scorers were Ady Krull with eight, Rylah Otto with six and Jaila Eng with five points.

Boys
The Fliers were outscored in the opening quarter 17-10 and then put in 10 points in the second quarter to close the gap, 23-20 at the half. Flandreau had third quarter scoring woes only hitting seven points as the Bulldogs added 16. In the final frame, Flandreau won the quarter 12-11, but it was too little too late.
Final score was 50-39.
“We played a good Baltic team tough,” said Head Coach Brendan Sheppard.
“They did a few things defensively that caused us some problems that we should be able to address if we play them again in a Region game. Ultimately, we had too many turnovers in the first half and put ourselves in a tough position early,” noted Sheppard.
Rebounding was tight with the Fliers garnering 28 to 29 for Baltic. The Fliers only connected on 3 of 9 from the free throw line and shot 35 percent from the field.
Flandreau’s leading scorers were Xavier Bien and Luke Sheppard both scoring 14 points. Sheppard had eight rebounds and dished out six assists.
JVers topped the Bulldogs 32-15 with Trevor Peters hitting eight points and both Jake Hamilton and Nathan Ross adding six.
In the C game, Baltic took the edge winning 34-32. Braehden Smith-Kuhnel scored nine points and Griffin Hemmer eight.
