Fliers close out home schedule with win

FLANDREAU – After dropping a pair of recent games, the Flier boys basketball team got back into the win column with a 10-point win over Elkton-lake Benton, 59-49, on Friday, February 20.
The win was the final home regular season game for five seniors: Xavier Bien, Jadon Eng, Kody Kneebone, Alex Poitra and Luke Sheppard as well as for Coach Brendan Sheppard who will resign from coaching at season’s end.
“We had a back and forth battle with Elkton, noted Coach Sheppard.
“We got a few steals that led to transition layups to give ourselves a cushion in the fourth quarter. Jadon Eng played with a lot of energy and made numerous hustle plays.”
Against the Elks, won three of the fourth quarters, 19-15, 7-9, 15-14 and powered it home with an 18-11 fourth quarter performance.
Leading that performance was Bien putting in 17 points and handing out three assists. Assisting Bien was Sheppard with a double double, 13 points and 13 rebounds, and giving out six assists.
Teams shot evenly at 43 percent for the Fliers and 42 percent for the Elks. The Fliers handily won off the glass 36-22.
The Fliers also took the JV contest by a score of 39-24. Nathan Ross scored 12 and Jake Hamilton added 10 points.
