Spring tries for early arrival

Open water returns along the Big Sioux River near the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe’s powwow grounds north of town as temperatures continue to run well above average for this time of year. The river — typically a winter playground for anglers, side-by-sides and snowmobiles — has seen little activity this season due to mild conditions and limited ice cover. For the brief window a couple of weeks ago when the ice did hold, the windy waterway was busy with winter recreation before warmer weather returned.
