DESMET – Last week the Fliers finish up doubleheaders in regular season play hosting Baltic on Tuesday. The girls are at No. 10 ranked West Central on Tuesday and the boys host Elkton-Lake Benton Friday evening.
Girls
Despite trailing 9-6 after a quarter of play, the Flier girls basketball team defeated the DeSmet Bulldogs, 44-33.
At the half, Flandreau held the edge, 18-14 and extended it to 34-24 by the end of the third.
The Fliers outshot the Bulldogs 35-20 percent nailing 17 of 49 attemtps. DeSmet excelled off the glass garnering 49 rebounds to the Fliers’ 37.
Morgan Sheppard had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 18 points to lead the Fliers. Tenley LeBrun made three 3-point shots for nine points.
Senior Hannah Krull aided her team with nine rebounds five giveaways.
The Bulldogs were led by 10 points each from Megan Dylia and Harper Anderson
JV team edged the Bulldogs, 31-20 behind 10 points from Tenley LeBrun, seven from Rona Streitz and five from Nora Hamilton.
Boys
The Bulldogs came in to Flandreau as the third ranked Class B team and came out firing to defeat the Fliers 72-34.
The Bulldogs scored 22 first quarter and 20 second quarter points to hold a 42-21 led at half time. They poured in 30 more points in the final half to earn the win.
“DeSmet is a top team in class B and they were really on their game,” said Coach Brendan Sheppard.
“They hit 12 three-point shots in the first three quarters and, combined with their powerful inside game, it was too much for us.”
The Bulldogs also fired 54 percent in field goal shooting while the Fliers hit 30 percent. They also caused 15 Flier turnovers stealing the ball from Flandreau 11 times.
The Fliers were held to single digit player scoring with Xavier Bien coming in with nine and Alex Poitra, eight counters. Jadon Eng had six rebounds. The Bulldogs won off the glass 33-21. Giving out assists was Kody Kneebone with three and Luke Sheppard aided the defense with two blocked shots.
The Bulldogs used three players in double digit scoring with Trace VanRegenmorter hitting 17, Tom Aughenbaugh 16 and Noah Luethers, 15.
The Flier JV team won their contest 39-19 with Trevor Peters scoring eight and Jake Hamilton seven.
