
FLANDREAU –In a rare pair of home quads in one week, the Flier wrestling team was divided in action picking up three duals and dropping three.
“It was a busy week for the Flier wrestling team,” said Coach Cody Chamblin referring to the pair of home quads and the conference tournament for the boys and the Yankton tourney for the girls.
“In the duals, we took losses to two teams who qualified for the State Dual Tournament (held this weekend),” he added.
On Tuesday, they defeated Howard (44-33) and Hamlin/Castlewood (66-9) but narrowly lost to Deuel/Deubrook (36-38).
Thursday, Flandreau lost to #5 rated Tri-Valley (16-55) and #7 rated Kingbury County (28-53) but defeated Garretson (48-33).
Tuesday, Feb. 3
Six Fliers won all their matches on February 3.
Teague Bergjord won a tech fall over Drew Maier, Howard, pinned Gage Landmark of D/D and won a forfeit.
Gabe Frias took two forfeit wins and defeated Aiden Warren of D/D in a tech fall and Zach Pederson defeated Erich Fokken of D/D and also won a pair of forfeits.
Justin Klein pinned Kreyton Karstens of Howard, and won a couple forfeits.
Heavyweight Tom Loehr was also 3-0 seeing the mat twice. He pinned Aiden Schwader of Howard and decisioned Raymond Klein of D/D along with earning a forfeit.
Brett Johanson was 2-0 on the night receiving two forfeit wins.
Thursday, Feb. 5
Bergjord and Pederson again went 3-0 in this dual.
Pederson, only a Flier sophomore, picked up career win 100 in a match with Alex McFarland of TV by major decision and got two forfeit wins.
Bergjord won a forfeit and pinned Xander Sharp of TV and Chase Costello of Garretson.
Frias matched up with Class B #1 ranked at 132, Owen Bunde and gave the Mustang a good battle and the fans a great match to watch but lost 6-1. Frias also defeated Noah Vig of KC and won a forfeit to settle for 2-1 in the quad.
In another premier match for all fans to see, Klein who is rated #3, faced #2 Landyn Reiser of TV with the Mustang prevailing in a major decision.
Klein also pinned #8 rated Donovan Sandven of KC and earned a forfeit to finish 2-1 on the night.
“The boys and girls wrestled well in front of a full house in the elementary gym. We celebrated Parent’s Night, our seniors and also held a benefit for Sutton Murphy (a Kingbury County wrestler who was injured in January). Plus, Zach Pederson hit a milestone in collecting his 100th career win.”
