Sheppard nets 1000th point




FLANDREAU – Both Flandreau Flier basketball teams won their respective games at the Flandreau Athletic Hall of Fame Classic held Saturday in the Flandreau High School gym.
The Flier girls won 51-17 over Parker/Marion and the boys also won over the Pheasants, 64-49.
Other games on the day were: Girls, Ethan over Irene-Wakonda, 66-42 and boys: Ethan defeated Canton, 72-60 and Pipestone Area won over Irene-Wakonda, 65-54.
Boys vs. Parker/Marion
In their fourth game in six days, the Flier boys prevailed in the day’s final game of Classic winning over Parker/Marion, 64-49.
Chosen as the game’s MVP was Alex Poitra, Flier senior.
Luke Sheppard had a milestone during the game scoring his 1000th career point as a Flandreau Flier.
“We finished off a busy week with another win. We were again solid defensively with Jadon Eng grabbing eight rebounds and bringing good energy,” said Coach Brendan Sheppard.
“We received good contributions from everyone with Alex Poitra taking home player of the game honors.”
The Fliers were never challenged in scoring. They won the first quarter 16-4 and extended it to 26-15 by halftime. Both teams scored 19 third quarter points and the Fliers finished it off with another 19 point fourth quarter performance.
As a team, they shot 54.2% to the Pheasants’ 33.3. Flandreau did committ more fouls 18 to 11 and turnovers 12 to 10 in the contest.
Kody Kneebone led all scoring with 17 points and Xavier Bien added 16 shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
For Poitra’s MVP honors, he put in 11 points and gave out six assists.
Sheppard finished with nine rebound, seven assists and nine points.
Earlier in the day, the JV team defeated the Pheasants, 35-31. Tucker Hemmer scored 14 to lead the Fliers and Nathan Ross had eight with Griffien Hemmer chipping in seven points.
Girls vs. Parker/Marion
The Flier girls were never threatened in their 51-17 win over the Parker/Marion Pheasants on Saturday during the FAHOF.
Morgan Sheppard led the Flier effort with 20 points and 12 rebounds and was chosen as the game’s MVP.
Aly Schepel and Rhegan Sheppard both scored eight points.
The Fliers led at all quarter stops, 14-4, 21-12 and 40-14.
The Flier JV team defeated Parker/Marion 47-19.
Tenley LeBrun led her team with 18 points, followed by Rona Streitz with nine and Calla Wiese with seven.
