CLEAR LAKE – “The boys did not disappoint,” said Head Coach Cody Chamblin referring to his Fliers performance at the Big East/Lake Central Conference meet held Saturday, Feb. 7.
“We had six place winners with two as champions and placed third as a team,” he noted.
Team title went to Kingsbury County scoring 156.5 points and Clark/Willow Lake came in second at 139 points. The Fliers third place came from scoring 123 points. They were followed by Beresford/Alcester-Hudson and Elk Point-Jefferson at 109 and 108.5.
Fifteen schools comprise the Big East and Lake Central Conference tournament entries.
Taking first was Gabe Frias and Justin Klein. Second place went to Teague Bergjord and Tom Loehr while a third place finish came from Zach Pederson. Coming in fourth was Dalin Billmeier.
“Frias lead it off, knocking off two highly ranked wrestlers in the state,” said Chamblin.
Frias came into the conference tourney as the number three seed in the 132 pound class. He worked his way to the finals by defeating two seed, Benny Pommer of Clark/Willow Lake to match up with Class B #5 rated Keagan Hill of Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney. Frias was behind 3-5 and earned a third period takedown to win first and All-Conference honors, 6-5.
“Gabe has a motor that doesn’t stop and pushes every kid to their limit.”
“Our other champ was Justin Klein,” said Chamblin. “He made short work of his three matches on the day with three falls,” he added.
Klein swept through the bracket as the number one seed and wrestled a total of 1:15 on the day enroute to the All-Conference 175 pound title. His first two pins on the day were slapped in 24 and 26 seconds and in the finals, again he went to work quickly and pinned Donovan Sandven of Kingbury County in 35 seconds.
In the 126 pound division, Flier senior Bergjord lost 7-0 to Kaden Wookey of Clark/Willow Lake to close out his conference career with a second place finish.
Loehr earned his way to the finals and faced Addison Peterson of Elk Point-Jefferson but had to settle for runner-up losing in the heavyweight finals, 9-3.
“Tom wrestled great with a lot of long matches,” said Chamblin. “He knnocked off a ranked kid before falling in the finals.
Sophomore Pederson, at 138, took third in a 3:21 tech fall against Tyson Hagberg of Deuel.
Closing out the Flier place winners was 150 lb. Dalin Billmeier. His final match was against Kanin Klentz from BAH and the Flier lost at 15-0 tech fall in 4:03 to place fourth.
“Dalin had a dominating first round match beating the third ranked kid.”
Chamblin noted that his wrestlers are performing well to close out the regular season and push each other every day.
“These guys will push it hard the next two weeks, prepare to make improvements and punch that ticket to Sioux Falls.”
Girls at Yankton
Friday evening, Coach Chamblin took four girls to the Yankton Girls Invitational where a lot of tough competition was found.
“The girls had a tough night,” said Chamblin. “There’s girls there from 40 schools.
Lone place winner was seventh grader Grace Klein. She wrestled round robin style against three other girls and went on to win two of her three of her matches.
Tenley Quick and Rory Thielsen both wrestled to a 1-2 record. Seventh grader Chelsey Marquez fell to 0-2 on the day.
“These girls will rest up and keep grinding getting ready for regions in a week and half.”
The Fliers’ next mat appearance will be at the Region 2B tourneys. The girls will be held Thursday, February 19 at 4 p.m. and the boys will be Saturday, February 21 starting at 9:30 a.m. Both tournaments are in Elk Point. Top four place winners advance to the State Tournament, February 26-28 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
