MONTROSE – In make-up contests, both Fliers teams lost to McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
The games were rescheduled from January 23.
Girls
MCM outlasted the Flier girls in the second half out performing them 33-17 to win the game, 57-42.
After a quarter of play the Fliers held the lead 14-10 and then the Cougars slowly crept back in scoring 14 to the Fliers’ 11 but Flandreau held the half time lead, 25-24. The second half scoring effort by the Cougars was the downfall for the Fliers.
Flandreau shot40.5% to MCM’s 42.
Topping the Flier attack was Morgan Sheppard with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Eighth graders Tenley LeBrun and Calla Wiese both scored nine points before Wiese fouled out.
Flandreau was sent to the free throw line five times making two points while MCM hit 7-for-7.
The Fliers had 18 miscues in the game to MCM’s 12.
In two overtimes, the Flier JV team got by the Fighting Cougards, 43-41. LeBrun scored 22 points in the win.
Boys
The Flier boys lost 41-27 to the MCM team. The deciding factor was the fourth quarter scoring as the Fliers only made a basket and a lone free throw.
“Tough loss for the Fliers against MCM,” said Coach Brendan Sheppard.
“We played hard and were great on defense. We just couldn’t get anything going on offense. We had missed layups, free throws and an abundance of turnovers. We struggled all night to get anything on offense. Part of that could be attributed to the size of MCM.”
The Cougars have a pair of 6’7″ players.
The Fliers led after one quarter 9-5 and again at the half, 22-18. Both teams put in 12 third quarter points before the Cougars took the edge in the fourth, 11-3.
Alex Poitra was the top Flier scoring11 points followed up by Xavier Bien and Kody Kneebone with nine points each.
Off the glass, Luke Sheppard had 14 rebounds and Kneebone brought in 12.
Both subvarsity games were also won by MCM.
The JV team lost 37-31. Trevor Peters scored seven and both Tucker Hemmer and Jake Hamilton each put in six.
The C game score was 34-26. Griffin Hemmer made 10 points and Braehden Smith-Kuhnel added eight.
