AVON In Class 9B semi-final football action, Colman-Egan garnered 407 total yards of offense and 17 first downs, but couldnt get past the Avon Pirates losing the game, 38-28 and the opportunity to play in the state finals.
Of that yardage, senior Hayden Pearson racked up 256 yards on the ground as the Hawks used him on 30 carries. He scored three of the four touchdowns.
The Hawks missed a chance to score early in the game after Pearson recovered the opening kickoff fumble placing the Hawks on the Pirates 38 yard line.
Colman-Egan drove down to the one, but were denied access to the endzone.
After the Pirates took over on fourth down, it took only one play and 99 yards for them to score a touchdown and the 2-point conversion.
The Hawks scored on their next possession after a 65 yard drive which ended in Pearsons 21 yard score but the extra point effort failed. The first quarter ended at 6-8.
The teams traded possession in the second quarter before Avon scored on second and goal from the two yard line. They also made the 2-point conversion setting the score at 6-16 which is what the half time score was.
The Hawks fired back after the half using Pearson for all 60 yards to score after two and half minutes had been ticked off the clock. They ran four straight first downs using the senior and then on second and a long four on the Pirates eight, Pearson crossed the goal line again and ran in the conversion points to close the gap at 14-16.
Colman-Egan held a brief lead late in the third quarter when Pearson walked in a 7-yard score after a 71 yard drive. The conversion pass was incomplete to put the score at 20-16.
That score wouldnt hold for long when the Pirates first play of their drive quickly was a 57 touchdown yard run. The conversion failed, but the hosts held the lead at 20-22 when the third quarter ended.
Avon scored midway through the fourth on a seven yard touchdown and completed the conversion points placing the score at 20-30.
They would seal the game at 2:21 mark on a 12 yard touchdown and extra points, but the Hawks didnt back down.
Colman-Egans last possession resulted in a Zach Pederson to Rhyder Behnke 18 yard touchdown pass with only five seconds remaining in the game. Pearson ran in the conversion points for his final scoring as a Hawk.
As a team, the Hawks racked up 263 yards on the ground (Pearson had 256 of these) and 144 through the air.
In passing, Pederson was 14 of 27 totaling 120 yards and Pearson threw the ball twice, completing both, for 24 yards.
Dalin Billmeier had five receptions for 44 yards, Behnke had two catches for 42 yards and a touchdown and Rowdy Bowen had seven receptions gaining 41 yards.
The defense was led by Thomas Loehr who had seven solo and three assisted tackles. Bringing down six solo and four assisted tackles was Behnke. Pearson also had the fumble recovery and Westyn Pearson and Clayton Bohlman each had a sack.
Next season Coach Chad Williamson will miss the work of his seniors, Hayden Pearson, Dalin Billmeier, Thomas Loehr and Preston Meyer.
