The Crystal Theatres annual fall musical kicks off this Thursday evening and runs through a Sunday matinee performance.
If youre not familiar with Little Shop of Horrors, its the quirky story of a plant that tries to take over the world.
Little Shop of Horrors is a musical comedy spoof on horror show. It follows Seymour Krelborn, a downtrodden floral assistant, who discovers a carnivorous plant he names Audrey II. The plant quickly becomes the stores main attraction, bringing sudden success to Seymour and the flower shop. The only catch is that Audrey II has an appetite for human blood, and as the plant grows, so does its demand for fresh victims. The music is in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown.
The Crystal Theatres production is said to be a fantastic adaptation of the Rick Moranis version from the 1980s, featuring strong vocals and plenty of humor.
Co-director Val Smith promises the musical and its cast and crew will deliver an enjoyable evening that showcases local talent like youve never seen them before. Among the performers are some familiar faces: local attorney Paul Lewis takes a lead role this year, performing solos and even a tango with Ted Kulm. Mason Thompson returns to the stage as the eccentric dentist, and Matt Knippling lends his voice to the scheming plant. The doo-wop girls, all local high school students, are steady background harmonies throughout the soundtrack.
Co-director Dan Sutton adds that Its a horror comedy everyone is having a great time, reassuring those unfamiliar with the show that its more fun than fright.
Little Shop of Horrors continues through the weekend at the Crystal Theatre. Tickets are available at the door, but shows are expected to sell quickly.
The box open to purchase tickets is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm at the theater and if you want to chance it, its also open before curtain time the days of the show.
