After months of construction and detours, the road is finally reopening to the Flandreau Early Childhood Enrichment Center, giving the community its first close-up look at a project years in the making.
The facility, designed for children ages six weeks through five years, aims to fill a critical gap in affordable, high-quality childcare especially for families working non-traditional hours.
Construction is moving at a rapid pace as we work toward our March 7 deadline, said Nicholas McBeain, chief facilities strategies manager.
We remain on schedule to complete the project on time. Currently, plumbing and electrical work are being roughed in. Over the next few months, well see major progress as the facility continues to take shape.
Nearly 50 families have already expressed interest.
We are currently gathering information from families about their specific needs, said Jody Hernandez, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains.
Beginning in early January, we will reach out to those on the interest list with additional information and enrollment steps.
Priority enrollment will go to families who live or work in Moody County, though the facility will be open to all. The center will open in phases initially serving about 60 children in May 2026 and expanding to full capacity of 140 by January 2027.
This Early Childhood Enrichment Center represents a transformative investment in Flandreau and Moody Countys future, Hernandez said. Quality, affordable childcare isnt just about caring for children its fundamental economic infrastructure that supports working families, attracts and retains employers, and strengthens our entire regional economy.
The $3 million project is funded through the City of Flandreau, Moody County, Dakota Layers, and a Community Development Block Grant, with additional fundraising underway for furnishings and playground equipment.
