GARRETSON Flandreau will send eight runners to the SDHSAA Class A Cross Country meet this Saturday at Broadland Creek Golf Course, Huron.
The runners include a full team of six girls, who finished third at Region, along with two boys.
Girls
Faith Wiese looks to defend her 2024 championship title and the team looks to better their fourth place finish from last year.
Last Wednesday, October 15 Wiese took second in the girls varsity division of the Region 2A meet at Garretson.
She ran a time of 17:27.65 for the silver. Taking the gold was Ellie Maddox of Sioux Falls Christian, 17:15.98.
SFC won the team title with a low 13 points and had five of the first six runners in the chute. West Central was second with 43 and the Fliers totaled 46 points for third place. Sioux Valley was fourth with 64 points.
Also for the Fliers, Calla Wiese was the 10th place winner in a time of 19:27.97 and Kiley Westberry was 16th in 20:22.57. Also in the top 20 was Tenley LeBrun taking 18th place at 20:58.29.
Since the team placed in the top three, the Fliers will send six runners to state with Genesis Martinez Soto (31st at 22:33.58) and Willow Stephens (37th at 23:30.95) completing the team.
Faith Wiese will now run in her last high school cross country meet. Westberry is a junior, LeBrun and Calla Wiese are eighth graders and Martinez Soto and Stephens are seventh graders giving the Fliers an opportunity for another strong team next season.
Boys
The Fliers will send Logan Kontz and Nathaniel Hobbie to the State B boys race.
Kontz finished 15th at 17:22.64 and Hobbie was 16th at 17:23.40.
Sam Schmidt just missed the cutoff taking 21st, Franklin Donis Castillo was 35, Wyatt Kontz was 36th and Teague Bergjord finished 41st.
Wesley Lyon of Sioux Falls Christian was the medalist in a time of 16:02.79 as his team also won the title. Garretson with 51 and West Central with 66 came in second and third. Tying for fourth was Madison and Sioux Valley with 80 points.
The Flier boys team finished in sixth place with 85 points.
