Faith Wiese was a repeat winner of the Lake Central and Big East Conference Girls Cross Country meets as she won both to close out her senior season of conference competition. Wiese also won both titles in 2024.
Flandreau will be in the Region 2A meet today (Wednesday) in Garretson.
LCC Meet
DESMET Scores were tight but the Flier girls cross country team eked out a win in the Lake Central Conference meet by one point. Flandreau runners scored 15 points, while Clark/Willow Lake and Sioux Valley both scored 16 in the four team meet.
Faith Wiese won the medalist honors running the 5000 meter race in 17:41.85 and had no competition pushing her for much of the race. Second place went to Kamryn Nesheim of C/WL (19:26.88).
Flier runner Calla Wiese came in fourth with her time of 19:49.81, and Kiley Westberry finished 10th in a time of 21:14.25. Also running for the Fliers was Tenley LeBrun with her 13th place time of 21:56.19 and Genesis Martinez Soto coming in 17th at 23:27.77.
The boys team title went to Deuel with 14 points and medalist honors was awarded to Carson Wosje of Sioux Valley. The Flier boys came in runner-up with 18 points and the Cossacks were third with 20. Castlewood, C/WL and DeSmet rounded out the teams placings.
Sophomore Logan Kontz was top Flier in the chute with a fourth place run of 17:52.32 and Nate Hobbie was sixth at 18:06.20. Junior Sam Schmidt took eighth (18:35.80) and Wyatt Kontz was 14th (19:56.85). Franklin Donis Castillo was 18th with a time of 20:05.88.
The JV girls team also took first with a low 10 points. Willow Stephens was first in the chute with a 3000 meter run in 13:10.14, and Dreamer Cournoyer was next with a fourth place time of 14:17.85. Senior Hailey Lahr was seventh with a time of 14:38.01 and freshman Rona Streitz came in 10th at 15:38.79.
Flandreaus JV boys took third with a score of 25. Sioux Valley won with 12 and Deuel was second at 14 points.
Teague Bergjord was first Flier in with a time of 12:09.32 to take second. Carter Hanssen of Sioux Valley was first at 11:31.82. Three other Flier runners came in consecutively, Owen Kelm (13:40.16), Munro McNickle (13:41.44 and Wakinyan Brushbreaker (13:54.29) took 12th through 14th place.
BEC Meet
VOLGA At the BEC meet, Sioux Valley got by the Flier girls team this time and took the team win, but Faith Wiese came out strong and was the repeat medalist.
The Cossacks scored 22 points. The Flier girls combined forces for 26 points. Beresford was third at 42. Parker/Marion came in fourth and Baltic was fifth.
Wiese was timed at 18:44.98 for the win, cruising in the chute 40 seconds ahead of the effort from Chesters Emmerson Eppard.
Calla Wiese was the bronze winner with a time of 20:35.26 and Kiley Westberry (22:14.14) and Tenley LeBrun (22:21.37) finished in 12th and 13th to help lead the Fliers to second place.
A couple of first year seventh grade runners finished consecutively. Willow Stephens finished 16th with a time of 23:22.12 and Genesis Martinez Soto was 17th at 23:29.11.
The Flier boys finished with 42 team points behind champion Garretson (21), and were just nicked by Beresford who scored 41. Sioux Valley was fourth and Parker/Marion was fifth.
First Flier boy crossing the finish line was sophomore Logan Kontz taking fifth place with a time of 18:37.15. He was followed closely by junior Nate Hobbie with a sixth place time of 18:48.97. Another Flier junior, Sam Schmidt, finished 10th clocking a 19:06.44.
Wyatt Kontz and Franklin Donis Castillo, two Flier seniors running in their final BEC race, took 22nd and 23rd. Kontz time was 20:06.22 and Donis Castillos was 20:16.16. Another senior, Teague Bergjord, also ran and finished 28th.
Carter Siemonsma of Garretson was the medalist in a time of 17:49.44.
Enroute to their first place team win, Flandreaus JV girls placed Dreamer Cournoyer in second and Isabel Kulm in eighth. Their times were 19:49.77 and 21:24.96. Rona Streitz came in ninth at 21:30.58 and Hailey Lahr placed 11th at 21:48.68. Lillyann Frias came in 17th (23:21.76) and Ivy Wegner was 19th at 23:33.72.
The team scored 20 points ahead of Baltic with 25 and Beresford with 39.
Cournoyer and Lahr are Flier seniors and completed their Flier cross country careers.
The JV boys placed Tayte Joachims in 11th, Munro McNickle 22nd, Owen Kelm 27th and Wakinyan Brushbreaker, 28th and finished fourth of four teams.
