4,400 new posts coming back out in Moody County

If youve been out and about in Moody County lately, youve probably noticed shiny new road signs popping up.

For the most part, folks seem pleased. Stop signs that were faded and riddled with bullet holes have finally been replaced. Bridges and other landmarks are better marked. Roads feel a little easier to navigate.

But if youve also noticed crews now yanking some of those fresh posts out of the ground, thats supposed to be happening, too.

County officials say theyve been fielding calls from residents some upset about the signs, others worried someone was stealing them. The real issue: about 5,400 markers were installed to identify bridges. Trouble is, there arent nearly that many bridges here. Crews mistakenly marked culverts instead.

So the contractor is back out, pulling roughly 4,400 of the posts.

Why the mix-up mattered the markers could have been a headache for farmers mowing ditches, for combines on the move this fall, and for snowplows once winter sets in.

The fix wont cost the county anything. The project itself was covered by a state grant dating back to 2011. Moody County was the last in South Dakota to get this signage upgrade it just took this long for crews to make their way here.
