More places to ride and park bikes coming soon

As more locals take to two wheels for school, work and recreation, new places to park and ride are taking shape across Moody County.
County Commissioners earlier this month approved placement of a bike rack outside the historic downtown Flandreau courthouse. The rack, not yet installed, will go along the back side of the courthouse near the parking lot.
Commission Assistant Marty Skroch told the Moody County Enterprise that several employees regularly bike to work, but without a designated rack, bicycles are often left leaning against the building or on the ground nearby.
Meanwhile, both Colman and Flandreau are moving forward with new bike and walking paths. In Colman, a path stretching across the community is being built as part of the Highway 34 reconstruction project.
In Flandreau, construction on a new path is scheduled for next year. It will begin on the west edge of town, run south on Veterans Street and loop back through the community. Organizers hope to eventually connect it to a larger network of paths long discussed by the Flandreau Development Corporation, the city and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe extending toward the powwow grounds and beyond.
E-bike regulations are also expected to come back before the Flandreau City Council at its next regular meeting Tuesday evening, September 2. With the growing number of e-bikes and scooters on local roads especially among younger riders city officials say theyve heard significant feedback from drivers who are concerned about safety.
